Its been a pretty grim week here so far, we are immensely saddened & wounded that John Scheerer & Sons, the Leeds shop & retail institution has closed its doors on Wednesday after 140 years in the business… not only have they been HighWoods biggest dealer, but it was also staffed by friends who go way back from long before HighWood existed.

Simon bought his first guitar from them 20 years ago & every drum kit I have ever bought came from Chris… its the only shop i have always gone back to.

We hope the guys from the shop will be OK, I would like to thank Chris Johnson & Mathew Wolfenden for their help pushing & supporting HighWood, they along with the rest of the previous staff from over the years provided fantastic customer service whenever i needed them.

Its sad that our high streets are dying & that they cant compete with the online, low overhead business models of “stack it high & sell it cheap”.
It seems it does not matter how good a web presence they have, until the cost of premises comes down on the high street to reflect the impact the Internet has had… the retail shops will struggle to survive in town centers, keep using the ones we have left people.

Its December, Xmas is coming, thought i better put up our closing times as i could do with a break & recharge the batteries.

The workshop closes for Xmas & New year holiday on 21st December, we open again on the 8th January.

CAST ACRYLIC – Is Back

Following demand & a lot of help from a new contact, we are very pleased to announce the return of our Cast Acrylic Drums, the CA shells are far superior to the rolled & glued/welded shells many other companies use, the acrylic is harder, there is less chance of the seam splitting & as they are cast they are as perfectly round as possible.

Several improvements have been made since we last offered these drums, Firstly the cost is now far more reasonable, we stopped making them as a std production model before due to the price on the material almost doubling in less than 12 months, now our new casting fabricator has brought the price right back & we can now pass that to you once again .

The 2nd major upgrade is the wider range of sizes, we can now offer – 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 & bass drum hoops in matching clear acrylic.

INKED BY EVANS – Custom heads on your HighWood Drums

HighWood are pleased to announce we are now joining the Evans Inked Programme, we already factory fit their heads on all our drums, but now any kit can be supplied with a custom full colour Bass head.

Band logos & almost any artwork submitted to us can be printed as required for a small up charge of £50 on top of the kit cost.

The process is quite simple – provide us with the high resolution artwork , text/logos and we will sort the design onto the Evans system, send you a preview for your approval & arrange the printing.

When your kit is ready, it will come fitted with your cutsom head, all inked heads will also feature a HighWood logo coloured & sized to complement your design.

Existing HighWood clients can also have their own custom heads printed that will feature a HighWood Logo for £65 per head. (delivery approx. 6 weeks)

Back from London Drum Show

well G, Bob & Hazel got back in the early hours of last night after an amazing 3 days at the LDS, 1 day of setup, 2 days of show, its was noisy, but great fun & many thanks to our clients & friends, both old & new who came over to say hi, the hallmarks went down very well & many people took advantage of the show stock special offers we had going on over the 2 days.

we will be back I’m sure.

its going to take 2 – 3 days to get back into things here, everyone is totally shattered but we have so many kits close to completion, expect more photos + LDS photos soon.

Drum Hire, festivals, gigs & events – New page added to site

Just thought I would point out a recent update to our website – The Drum Hire page, we have been doing this for a number of years when we could but we have only just made it official & advertised it here, for several years we have been asked by local promoters & event organisers to provide kits for, festivals, events & gigs. being a bespoke company we have not always had to the stock available to do this, but due to increasing demand we are making changes. We are also teaming up with Bob (our drum demonstrator) to offer an extensive collection of drums for studio as well as live hire, this means we have access to a wide range or soughtafter makes & models to cover anyones needs across yorkshire.
Be it for a recording session, one off gig, charity event, 3 days festival house kit, we have live kits designed for gig use that are built like tanks & full hardware sets by Gibraltar available with each kit.

Its been a bust season so far with Hire kits going out for The Long Devision Festival, BOMfest & Travs Fest.

The Hallmark Snare’s First Review

We Recently sent 2 Hallmark snares for review with Mike Dolbear, if you have never been to the Mikedolbear website as a drummer you are missing out, its the internets central hub for drum in news, reviews & info Mike & Gerry do a great job & have been very encouraging of HighWoods progress & development since we started in 2004.

The review is in & I’m pleased to say we seem to have done very well, so much so that David who reviewed the drum for the site is now the proud owner of Hallmark No 8.
